Life is full of mystery and filled with joy and sorrow, hope and despair, love and hate, trust and mistrust, etc. Life often unfolds itself not in the way it is expected. So, we struggle with unexpected life events to ensure safety and security, to maintain stability and continuity, or to rediscover our purposes and meanings.
Ideally, our innate ability to recover allows us to deal with difficulties and our learning experiences add more power to our problem-solving. We continue to grow as a person-in-the-world and as a person-in-relationships with others. However, human mind-body-spirit loses its direction and power when life events are too negative beyond our innate and acquired ability to recover, or resilience. These struggles are frequently manifest in the forms of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, or trauma, just to name a few.
Some mental health issues are biological. Some issues are psychological and relational. Some are rather social and cultural. In fact, mental disorders are multidimensional and multifaceted, from neurobiological to psychological to sociocultural to existential. In other words, mental health issues represent the complexity of human mind-body-spirit within a socio-cultural context. Thus, treatment of mental disorders should incorporate multidimensional and multifaceted approaches.
As a psychologist, I have extensive and intensive training in humanistic-existential-psychodynamic approaches to psychological treatment, cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness. I incorporate evidence-based practice for anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, bipolar, and psychosis and my research has been important part of my professional work that informs my clinical practice.
For my clinical practice, I place my primary focus on collaborative therapeutic relationships and on executive functioning, emotion regulation, cognitive processing, relational patterns, daily functioning at school or work, and goal setting and achievement. Gleaning from a more comprehensive bio-psycho-sociocultural-spiritual model, I conduct thorough assessment and perform integrative treatment that best matches to the needs that clients present. In short, I try my best to find out what works best for clients; whatever works best! In addition, I have special interest in racial and gender minority, religion and spirituality, Asian Americans, immigrants, and cross-cultural issues as these themes are often intertwined with clinical presentations.
I will do my best to facilitate your learning and healing at your pace.
